There are a variety of subsidies for individual entrepreneurs, SMEs and also industry. Most subsidies are aimed at companies that develop technologically innovative products or processes, or that contribute to the creation of sustainable or social structures, thus adding value to society.
In terms of the size of the companies receiving funding, a distinction must be made between direct funding and tax (indirect) funding. While tax-based research funding has so far been increasingly used by larger companies, direct funding applications to the Austrian Research and Promotion Agency are submitted by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in more than 50% of cases.

There are a multitude of funding programs and initiatives. The public funding agencies are aware that it is not always easy for companies to firstly keep track of the current range of funding available and secondly to know which funding is suitable for the company. Subsidies are financed by taxpayers’ money. Funding agencies must therefore document in a transparent and comprehensible manner why a company is allocated funding.
For the company, this means that the process of applying and reporting is very extensive. However, developers and engineers want to give priority to their products and projects, not to their administration. Many companies therefore choose to bring in external support.
Many companies would not describe themselves as a “classic” research company, but in Austria, in addition to funding basic research, there is also a system for funding new developments, creating prototypes and pilot plants, and further developing and improving processes and products. In many cases, such as in the case of the research bonus, these subsidies are not industry-specific.
Every company must be innovative in order to be able to hold its own in the market. It is often possible to receive funding for this.
